A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck southern Ibaraki prefecture early Sunday, causing injuries to 23 people across four prefectures and triggering emergency alerts in Tokyo.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the quake occurred at a depth of 70 kilometres, with no tsunami danger reported following the seismic event.
While Shinkansen bullet trains remained operational, the quake caused temporary power outages for 460 homes in Tokyo and delays to express trains serving Narita Airport.
