The Kerala government submitted formal recommendations to the Centre asking to limit the Ecologically Sensitive Area in the Western Ghats to 8,590.69 sq km of forest land.

Environment Minister Sunny Joseph stated that populated areas, farmlands, and plantations should be excluded entirely from the final notification.
