WHO Warns Ebola Outbreak in DRC Could Become Deadliest on Record

The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has resulted in over 2,000 deaths from 4,449 recorded cases, according to the World Health Organization.

Genetic sequencing published in Nature Medicine confirms the outbreak is driven by a new animal-to-human transmission of the rare Bundibugyo strain, distinct from previous 2007 and 2012 variants.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated the outbreak is on track to surpass the 2014-2016 West African crisis, with projections suggesting it could peak within six months.
