Scientists at the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition have proposed a 'dual-axis' regulatory framework to address rising obesity by evaluating both food processing levels and nutrient content.
The proposal aims to fill regulatory gaps in India, where the lack of a formal definition for ultra-processed foods limits the effectiveness of front-of-pack labeling and marketing restrictions.
Lead scientist SubbaRao M. Gavaravarapu stated that this evidence-based approach, aligned with the 2024 Dietary Guidelines for Indians, is critical for managing the dual burden of undernutrition and obesity.
