A new study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer found that infections were responsible for 2.3 million new cancer cases in 2024, accounting for 12% of total global cases.
A bacterium and several viruses were linked to these cancer cases, with a large proportion occurring in low- and middle-income countries.
Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan noted that vaccines can help prevent certain infections, while low- and middle-income countries remain more vulnerable.
