Texas has funded 85,344 students in the first year of its $1 billion Texas Education Freedom Accounts program, which was established by Senate Bill 2 in 2025.
The program received 274,000 applications, with 248,000 students deemed eligible, leaving 121,000 students on the nation's largest school choice waiting list.
Data from August 1, 2026, shows that 80% of participants come from families with household incomes below 200% of the federal poverty level, and 25% have a qualifying disability.
