Scientists from INST Mohali and BARC Mumbai have developed light-responsive nanobots that use 980-nanometre NIR lasers to target and destroy breast cancer cells through heat and reactive oxygen species.

The nanobots, which move at speeds of 27 ± 7 micrometres per second, are coated with folic acid to specifically identify and bind to folate receptors on tumour cells.

While preclinical tests in mice showed significant tumour-growth inhibition, researchers emphasize that the technology is not yet a clinical treatment and requires further safety and efficacy trials.
