
Researchers from Stanford University and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard have successfully used AI to generate thousands of viral genomes, resulting in 16 viable synthetic viruses.
Published in the journal Science, the study demonstrated that these synthetic phages were more effective at killing E. coli bacteria in laboratory conditions than their naturally occurring counterparts.
Experts warn that while the technology offers potential for new antibiotic-resistant infection treatments, it also necessitates stronger biosecurity guardrails to prevent the design of harmful pathogens.
