Pulmonologist Explains Causes of Worsening Nighttime Respiratory Symptoms in Winter

THE BRIEF
1

Dr Vikas Mittal, director of pulmonology at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, stated that winter air pollution, changing weather, and respiratory sensitivity frequently cause worsening cough, wheezing, and throat irritation at night.

2

Fine particulate matter like PM2.5 penetrates deep into the respiratory tract, causing airway inflammation. Furthermore, winter temperature inversions trap pollutants close to the ground, increasing concentrations after sunset.

3

Dr Mittal advised monitoring the Air Quality Index (AQI), limiting outdoor exposure during severe pollution, using air purifiers, and seeking medical evaluation if symptoms disrupt sleep.
