Iran Rejects Omani Proposal for Joint Strait of Hormuz Management

Iran rejected Oman's proposal for a 50-50 joint management of the Strait of Hormuz, citing national security concerns and a desire for greater control over the waterway.

The Omani plan, modeled on the Strait of Malacca agreement, suggested voluntary shipping fees to fund navigation and safety, but Iran countered with a plan for exclusive oversight.

Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi warned that the strait will remain closed unless a deal is reached, as diplomatic wrangling continues following the June 17 memorandum of understanding.
