
Villagers from Assam and Meghalaya along the Kulsi River formed the Assam-Meghalaya Joint Protection Committee to oppose a joint 55-megawatt hydropower-cum-irrigation project announced in June 2025.
Over 2,000 residents from indigenous communities gathered at Ukiam on Thursday to protest the dam, which is proposed at the habitat of the endangered Gangetic dolphin and threatens 46 villages.
Three traditional chiefs assured villagers they would withhold mandatory no-objection certificates, while the Brahmaputra Board estimated the project would cost 1,454.95 crore rupees at 2017 prices.
