The death toll from Tuesday's magnitude 7.1 earthquake in southwestern Japan has risen to 34, with authorities confirming six additional serious injuries.

The disaster, centered near Uki city, caused power outages for 40,000 homes and halted rail services across the southern island of Kyushu.
