Ebola Outbreak Spreads to Sixth Province in DR Congo

The Ebola outbreak in DR Congo has killed over 2,200 people out of 4,700 confirmed cases, spreading to a sixth province as surveillance systems struggle to track new infections.

UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher announced an additional $30.5 million in emergency funding, as 60 to 70 percent of new cases are detected outside of monitored contact lists.

Response efforts are hindered by strikes from unpaid health workers, insecurity, and a lack of protective equipment, with the current Bundibugyo virus strain lacking approved vaccines.
