Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the Indian Navy's first indigenously built Fleet Support Ship, named Surya, at Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday.
The 43,500-tonne vessel, built with 82% Indian content, measures 223.6 metres long and 31.5 metres wide, and can refuel and resupply several warships at sea simultaneously.
Singh also laid the keel for the fifth vessel in the series, FSS-5, and inaugurated a newly modernised 235-metre slipway and a 300-tonne Goliath crane.
