The Calcutta High Court questioned whether the West Bengal government could deport to Bangladesh all individuals who crossed the international border during the 1970s.
The bench was hearing a petition regarding Sahidul Sheikh, a man detained in Murshidabad on August 10 and ordered to be deported by the Foreigners Registration Officer on September 28.
The court kept the deportation order in abeyance until the next hearing, noting that the petitioner must be given a chance to respond to local police affidavits.
