Polycystic Ovary Syndrome has been officially renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome by the Endocrine Society to better reflect its status as a whole-body endocrine and metabolic condition.
Professor Terhi Piltonen noted that a global consensus article published in the Lancet argued the previous name overemphasized ovaries and cysts, leading to inadequate treatment diagnoses.
The name change aims to encourage a more holistic approach across multiple medical disciplines, including endocrinology, dermatology, and mental health.
