China's top political advisory body removed General Zhao Zongqi, the former Western Theatre Command chief, from his posts on August 26, 2026, without providing an official reason.
Zhao commanded the PLA during the 2017 Doklam standoff and the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, with US intelligence reports alleging he authorized the Galwan operation to 'teach India a lesson'.
His removal follows the dismissal of senior generals Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli from the Central Military Commission on August 28, amid a widening anti-corruption purge within the PLA.
