Flanders Introduces Mandatory Language Classes for Newcomer Students

Starting September 1, primary schools in Flanders will mandate separate language support classes for non-Dutch-speaking newcomers from the second year onwards to accelerate their transition into mainstream education.

Schools will receive additional resources to provide small-group instruction for preschoolers and primary pupils, while secondary schools must offer up to three extra language lessons for students identified as needing support.

Data from last June indicated that approximately 5 per cent of pupils required additional language intervention when transitioning from primary to secondary school, prompting the new curriculum requirements.
