Spanish Pensioner Whose Eviction Sparked Protests Dies at 87

Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old pensioner evicted from her Madrid apartment on 23 September, has passed away.

Her eviction after a rent increase from €500 to €2,650 became a symbol of Spain's housing crisis and triggered nationwide protests.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called an early election for 29 November following the parliamentary rejection of emergency housing legislation.
