West Bengal Directs Authorities to Prepare TET for In-Service Teachers

The West Bengal School Education Department has directed examination authorities to prepare for conducting the Teacher Eligibility Test for roughly 90,000 in-service primary and upper-primary teachers.

The directive implements a Supreme Court ruling that mandates TET qualification for in-service teachers appointed prior to the RTE Act of 2009 who have more than five years of service remaining.

The apex court's May 2026 order extended the compliance deadline to August 31, 2028, though teacher associations have raised concerns regarding exemptions for long-serving staff.
