Mutinous Soldiers Attack Military Base and Airport in Niger's Capital

Mutinous soldiers launched an overnight attack on Base 101 and the airport in Niamey, Niger, prompting the Ministry of Defence to deploy forces to regain control of the targeted sites.

The assault involved troops from Ouallam, Tera, and Dosso, with gunfire and explosions reported in the Plateau administrative district near the presidential palace, forcing residents to hide for hours.

Security experts suggest the mutiny, which targeted a base housing uranium reserves worth $250 million, was an attempt to overthrow the military government that seized power in July 2023.
