A recent SBI Research report revealed that about 34% of sanctioned teaching positions remain vacant across centrally funded higher education institutions in India.
India's higher education system grew to 64,756 institutes in FY24, with total student enrolment reaching 4.5 crore.
The shortage is particularly severe among professors, who face a vacancy rate of 56.2%, while IIITs recorded a 54% faculty vacancy rate.
