The Republic of Nauru has officially renamed itself to the Republic of Naoero to move away from its colonial past and preserve its indigenous language.
President David Adeang stated the change is intended to foster national pride, with citizens now to be addressed as dei-Naoero instead of Nauruan.
The island nation, which has a population of approximately 12,000, has formally notified international organizations and other countries of the name revision.
