Former Supreme Court judge Justice Kurian Joseph stated on Wednesday that the Chief Election Commissioner should not enjoy special personal privileges, emphasizing authority must rest with the institution.
Speaking at a seminar in Kerala, he warned that a lack of trust in election officials could undermine democracy, invoking Constituent Assembly member Hriday Nath Kunzru's remarks.
He proposed that all Election Commissioners should have their appointment procedures protected by the Constitution and be removable only through Supreme Court judge procedures.
