EU Chief Proposes Associate Member Status For Canada In Strasbourg

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen pitched Canada as the 27-nation bloc's first associate member during a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The proposal involves closer cooperation on tech, defense, energy, and critical minerals as both economies seek to pivot away from a hostile United States.

EU treaties do not currently envision associate membership, and member states must approve any partnership with a third country.
