Odisha experienced its heaviest monsoon rainfall in 20 years as a deep depression brought torrential rain and landslides, disrupting transport and forcing school closures across eight districts.
State revenue and disaster management minister Suresh Pujari stated that the weather system impacted 37 blocks across six districts, while Tentulikhunti in Nabrangpur recorded a state-high 395 mm of rain in 24 hours.
The local administration in Gajapati evacuated around 5,000 people to safer locations, identifying 139 landslide-prone areas and shifting residents to 249 cyclone shelters.
