WHO Reports Congo Ebola Outbreak Began Months Before Official Declaration

The World Health Organization confirmed Monday that the current Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo began in February, months before its official declaration on May 15.

Confirmed cases have reached 4,200 with over 1,900 deaths, making it the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, according to the latest government figures.

The rare Bundibugyo virus strain currently lacks approved vaccines or treatments, with 60% to 70% of new cases occurring outside of monitored contact groups.
