Ebola Death Toll Surpasses 1,500 in Democratic Republic of Congo

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in 1,521 deaths and 3,442 confirmed cases as of July 28, 2026.

The current epidemic is driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain, which lacks approved vaccines, with Bunia in Ituri Province serving as the primary epicentre of the crisis.

The WHO has announced a $518 million six-month response plan, while the U.S. CDC has pledged $107 million to help contain the virus, which has a current contact tracing rate of 78.3%.
