India's Data Centre Capacity Projected to Reach 6 GW by 2029

India's data centre capacity is projected to grow fourfold to 6.5 GW by 2030, with the Union Ministry of Power estimating that AI alone will add 26.3 GW of demand by 2031-32.

Data centres consumed an estimated 150 billion litres of water in 2024-25, a figure projected to more than double to 358 billion litres annually by 2030.

Transmission bottlenecks led to the curtailment of 300 GW-hours of renewable energy in the first quarter of 2026, as grid infrastructure struggles to keep pace with rapid data centre expansion.
