The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay for promoting peace and international law.
Born in Durban into a family of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid, Pillay became a lawyer and legal pioneer confronting deep structural discrimination.
Pillay has served as a judge on the South African High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the International Criminal Court, and the International Court of Justice.
