Private Colleges Now Account for 54% of MBBS Seats in India

Private medical colleges now hold 54% of India's 1,36,939 total MBBS seats, marking a significant shift in the distribution of undergraduate medical education.

Of the 9,911 new MBBS seats added for the 2026-27 academic year, 7,800 were created in private institutions compared to 2,111 in government-run colleges.

The total cost for an MBBS degree in private colleges can range from ₹25 lakh to over ₹1.5 crore, raising concerns about the affordability of medical training.
