MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan stated that India consciously chose to subsidise mature semiconductor nodes ranging from 28nm to 180nm because advanced 2nm chips are too expensive.
Krishnan emphasized the concept of sovereign autonomy, aiming to build domestic capacity, reduce reliance on external suppliers, and integrate into global value chains.
Tata Electronics' Gujarat fab is scheduled to commence commercial production by mid-2028, initially utilizing a 90nm process before transitioning to 28nm.
