Census 2027 to Include Caste and Vaccination Data in Second Phase

The second phase of the 2027 Population Census, scheduled for February 2027, will record caste identities for all communities for the first time in independent India.

The questionnaire includes 33 specific items, such as caste, Covid vaccination status, literacy levels, and migration history, to be collected by 30 lakh field functionaries.

Self-enumeration for the census begins on August 17, 2026, in Ladakh and parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, ahead of the nationwide rollout.
