The Union Cabinet approved the ₹23,371-crore National Circular Bioenergy Scheme, known as GOBARdhan, on August 6, 2026, to boost domestic compressed biogas (CBG) production nearly ten-fold by 2036.

The scheme introduces a stable-administered price of ₹2,110 per Metric Million British Thermal Unit (MMBTU) and offers capital assistance of up to ₹2 crore per tonne per day for eligible CBG projects.

The initiative aims to scale up from approximately 300 currently operating plants to 5,000, utilizing agricultural residue and municipal waste to create rural jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
