Nepal announced plans to drain four high-altitude glacial lakes this fiscal year to mitigate outburst flood risks following a disaster that killed over 1,400 people.
Design work and detailed studies for Thulagi, Lower Barun, Lumding Tsho, and Hongu II lakes will run until mid-July 2027.
The $50-million project, funded by the Green Climate Fund, UNDP, and Nepal government, will use gated structures and take up to six years.
