Patient Receives Human Kidney After 271 Days with Pig Organ

Tim Andrews, 66, successfully received a human kidney transplant after surviving for a record 271 days with a gene-edited porcine kidney, according to a study published in The Lancet.

The pig kidney functioned without dialysis for 271 days before being removed, followed by 82 days of dialysis prior to the successful human organ transplant in 2025.

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital confirmed the porcine organ did not negatively impact the patient's ability to tolerate the subsequent human kidney, proving xenotransplantation can serve as a temporary bridge.
