Venezuela President Maduro ally Alex Saab pleads guilty in U.S. court

Alex Saab, a close ally of ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering conspiracy before U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams in Miami.

Saab agreed to forfeit $195 million, cooperate with the U.S. Department of Justice, and admitted to stealing millions from a welfare plan intended to feed needy Venezuelans.

The guilty plea comes as federal prosecutors prepare separately to take Nicolas Maduro to trial on June 1, 2027, following his arrest and detention in a Brooklyn jail.
