Hurricane Lala Strengthens to Category 1 as it Approaches Hawaii

Hurricane Lala intensified into a Category 1 storm on Saturday, bringing heavy rain and wind to Hawaii's Big Island for the first time in 155 years.

The National Hurricane Center recorded sustained wind speeds of 120 kilometres per hour, with rainfall predictions reaching up to 63.5 centimetres in higher elevations of the Big Island.

Governor Josh Green warned of flash flooding and hazardous surf through the weekend, while officials urged residents to shelter in place before the storm's full impact.
