India Passes Anti-Paper Leak Bill With Stricter Penalties

India's upper house passed legislation on Thursday to combat examination paper leaks, following weeks of youth-led protests that led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The new law doubles the maximum prison sentence for offenders to 10 years and increases the maximum fine to over $1 million, following approval by the lower house.

The bill now awaits the signature of President Droupadi Murmu to become law, after the federal investigative agency charged 13 people in a recent medical entrance test leak case.
