A study of 17,710 participants presented at the ESC congress in Munich found that high blood levels of the sweetener xylitol are associated with a 57% increased risk of cardiovascular events.
Researchers from Charité University Hospital in Berlin observed that the increased risk over a six-year period remained consistent regardless of age, sex, or pre-existing conditions like diabetes.
Dr. Marco Witkowski noted that xylitol, commonly found in chewing gum and jam, may enhance platelet clotting, highlighting the need for further safety research as consumption levels rise.
