Paraguayan Senators voted 44 to 1 to impeach President Santiago Pena over the collapse of Ueno Bank that locked citizens out of accounts.
The Central Bank took control of Ueno Bank on Tuesday, freezing accounts and triggering widespread protests across the country.
Lawmakers opted for impeachment rather than accepting his resignation to strip him of immunity, with Vice President Pedro Alliana set to complete the mandate.
