Ophthalmologists issued safety warnings ahead of Deepavali, cautioning that bursting firecrackers can cause injuries from minor abrasions to severe ocular trauma.
Dr. M. Elangovan noted that explosive crackers produce dangerous forcible particles in all directions that can penetrate soft eye tissue at high velocities.
Doctors also warned that sparklers cause direct heat corneal scars, while bright light-emitting crackers can cause temporary blackouts or retinal cell bleaching.
