The US Food and Drug Administration approved an India-made generic version of lenacapavir, a twice-a-year injectable medication designed to prevent HIV infection.
Developed by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories under agreements with global health organizations, the generic drug is expected to cost around $40 a year in 120 low- and middle-income countries.
While currently restricted from sale in the United States due to Gilead Sciences' patent, the generic version aims to expand access to pre-exposure prophylaxis for millions worldwide.
