Iran Links Strait of Hormuz Reopening to US Concessions

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on August 9, 2026, that reopening the Strait of Hormuz requires the U.S. to meet specific demands, including lifting sanctions.

Tehran demands a permanent end to the war, withdrawal of U.S. military forces, and the unconditional release of frozen assets before restoring safe passage through the waterway.

While Iran and Oman are finalizing a temporary deal for new shipping lanes, Araghchi clarified that this agreement does not guarantee the immediate reopening of the strait.
