Scientists Raise Biosecurity Concerns Over AI-Designed Viruses

Researchers successfully used the AI model Evo 2 to design complete genetic instructions for bacteriophages that infect E. coli, raising concerns about the pace of biosecurity safeguards.

While the AI was trained with safety restrictions excluding human, animal, and plant viruses, experts warn that digital design capabilities are advancing faster than current screening and containment protocols.

The UK Health Security Agency's mSCAPE program is currently analyzing genetic material to track emerging pathogens, though it is not specifically designed to detect novel AI-created biological threats.
