The Delhi Police informed the Supreme Court on August 17, 2026, that facial recognition technology used during NEET-UG protests was deployed solely to identify individuals with criminal records.
Police officials stated that the surveillance was conducted in 'legitimate state interest' and denied allegations of mass monitoring of peaceful protesters at Jantar Mantar.
The Supreme Court is currently reviewing the legality of such surveillance tools, with petitioners arguing that the technology infringes on the fundamental right to privacy.
