The United States military destroyed five Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island following two days of attempted ballistic missile strikes on a US warship.
Iran retaliated by firing 20 ballistic missiles at the Al Azraq base in Jordan, where local air defences successfully intercepted 18 of the projectiles while two landed in unpopulated areas.
US Central Command confirmed no American personnel were harmed during the exchange, while Iran's state broadcaster reported that crews were evacuated from the targeted tankers before the vessels were rendered inoperable.
