A study published in the journal Diabetologia found that women diagnosed with endometriosis face a 46% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those without the condition.
Researchers from George Mason University analyzed data from nearly three million women in the Utah Population Database between 1996 and 2021, including 100,000 diagnosed with endometriosis.
The association was strongest among premenopausal women and those without obesity, with the highest risk observed in women suffering from extra-pelvic endometriosis where tissue grows outside the pelvis.
