The European Union has scheduled an emergency meeting of interior ministers for Tuesday after an estimated 60,000 migrants entered the Spanish territory of Ceuta between Wednesday and Friday.

At least 72 people died during the mass migration event, which saw thousands swim from Morocco or breach border fences, though Spanish officials report that most migrants have since returned.

In response, 22 of the 27 EU member states have called for coordinated action to secure external borders, while France and Portugal have increased police presence at their respective borders with Spain.
