THE BRIEF
1

Two new glacial lakes have formed in Nepal near the source of the August 26, 2026, ice-rock avalanche that triggered devastating flash floods in the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli river system.

2

The National Disaster Management Authority confirmed the lakes measure 19.80 hectares and 7.28 hectares, while satellite imagery from August 27 identified a separate 20.25-hectare water body in the Lhende Khola region.

Officials warn that while early warning systems can provide 30 to 45 minutes of notice, the risk of further glacial-lake outburst floods remains until the new formations are fully drained.
